- Vapour Open Construction with wood fibre insulation
Often referred to as ‘permeability’ or ‘vapour open construction’, this core functionality of the building fabric is its ability to deal with the negative effects of moisture in a natural way. Benefits > Vapour open construction What makes a building healthy ? A building is healthy if it doesn’t harm the environment or its occupants. Breathability is at the core of what makes a building healthy. A vapour-open insulation product contributes to a healthier indoor environment, and in turn, to your wellbeing. Often referred to as ‘ permeability ’ or ‘vapour open construction’ , this core functionality of the building fabric is its ability to deal with the negative effects of moisture in a natural way. Fabric first approach Buildings with a ‘fabric first approach’ are not afraid of moisture. They understand how it works and deal with it in a natural way. The internal side of a wall or roof incorporates a vapour control layer which limits the amount of moisture that can enter the structure. The external side i s vapour open and ensures any moisture that does enter the structure can naturally migrate to the outside and evaporate away. In addition to this fabric balance, the use of wood fibre ensures that any moisture in the structure can be stored at source and then migrated to the outside through natural processes . - Summer Heat Protection with wood-fibre insulation
Get up to 5 times the summer heat protection compared to regular insulation. The Science doesn't lie. Protection against the Heat Benefits > Summer Heat Protection Real Heat Protection Summer heat protection compared to synthetic insulation. The Science doesn't lie. It's all about low Thermal Diffusivity , Amplitude dampening & Phase shifting . Yes, it may sound a little technical and even a little boring, but the science doesn't lie when it comes to the effectiveness of natural wood fibre insulation. Amplitude dampening Amplitude dampening is a measurement of the difference between the fluctuations in the external and internal temperatures. When the temperature fluctuates dramatically outside (for example, between 18 and 42 degrees = 24) and if the house can maintain a very low fluctuation in temperature (between 19 and 21 degrees = 3) then the building has been dampened from the external to internal side by 24/3 - a factor of 8. Phase shifting Phase shifting is the time span between the highest external temperature and the highest internal temperature. The aim of efficient summer heat protection is to delay the transfer of heat, until it cools down outside and the heat can be released back outside. A phase shift of 10 hours is to be desired. Wood fibre insulation achieves this by its density, low conductivity and thermal storage capacity. Thermal Diffusivity: The Key to Summer Heat Protect The lower the number, the better protection against the Heat Learn more about Summer Heat Protection with this Steico brochure (1.2Mb) .
- Termite Safe | Insulate Naturally
Wood fibre insulation is not a source of food for termites for two main reasons. In the process of making wood fibre, the wood undergoes a chemical and anatomical transformation. Termite Safe Why wood fibre insulation is not a food source for termites Wood fibre insulation is not a source of food for termites for two main reasons. In the process of making wood fibre, the wood undergoes a chemical and anatomical transformation. During the firing phase of the fibres at high temperature, the sugars of the wood (xyloses) are extracted from the fibres and removed with the cooking water. In the absence of nutrients, wood fibre is of no interest to boring insects. These characteristics are recognized by a standard (NF EN 335-3).

- Benefits of Wood-fibre insulation | Insulate Naturally
Discover all the benefits of using insulation made of natural wood fibre for your home. Non-toxic, superior insulating properties + more Discover all the benefits of Natural Wood Fibre Insulation Insulation that's naturally better With Steico's natural wood fibre insulation, you obtain well-being in the house: Protection from cold weather, heat and noise, a pleasant internal climate and balanced air humidity making the property particularly Allergy friendly. With these advantages, we believe our insulating materials to be genuinely multi-talented Water vapour open STEICO insulating materials function as the clothing for the house. Excessive water vapour (e.g. from cooking or showering) can permeate through the structure. This vapour permeability prevents mould and construction damage. At the same time, wax additives create a water resisting (hydrophobic) nature to STEICO products providing effective protection from the elements. Our sarking and sheathing may be exposed for up to 8 weeks as a temporary building covering. Summer heat protection STEICO insulating materials are heavier than many conventional insulating materials. This additional weight (higher gross density) is the key to the summer heat protection. STEICO insulating materials dampen the daily temperature fluctuations through this higher resistance. In the building it remains cooler inside. Winter cold protection The porous structure of the Wood fibre insulation locks in air and offers efficient insulation against a typically cold winter. Whether used in timber or masonry construction, in existing buildings or meeting passive house requirements in a new build, STEICO insulating materials are the ecological solution in all ranges of application. Without harmful additives STEICO Wood fibre insulating materials are manufactured entirely from timber. During production, no harmful additives are used. Any additives used are natuarally sourced and their use minimised. All our insulation materials rely on the 'Lignin' inherant in the timber as a bonding agent, rather than artificially introduced resins. With the use of STEICO products you not only reduce the impact on the environment but also improve the environment in your property. Sustainable and certified products The timber is sourced from forest thinnings or as sawmill by-product. All STEICO products are certified to FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) or the PEFC (programs for the Endorsement OF Forest Certification Schemes) standards with full chain of custody paperwork. This process provides you with the assurance that the raw material for all our products originates from sustainable forestry. Excellent fire protection STEICO’s rigid insulation panels don’t need any fire protection additive. Their high density prevents them from burning. Only the flexible and air injected insulation include a natural fire protection additive. STEICO insulating materials will not emit toxic gases in the event of fire, unlike many petro-chemical based insulating materials. Easy to use Natural wood fibre are easy to handle and to install. They don't contain any toxic ingredients classifying them as non-irritant to handle. They can be cut using regular wood cutting tools. Excellent sound insulation properties Owing to the fibrous structure and the higher gross density of STEICO insulating materials, they are able to make an important contribution to the acoustic performance of the structure. Not only reducing external airborne sound (for example road noise) but also that within the building. With STEICO systems it is possible to reduce the effects of impact sound transfered through the structure
